I'm running Cairo-dock version 3.4.1 on Linux/Ubuntu 16.04 with Compiz. I have noticed for the past few years Using the make launcher for Chrome, I'll get a launcher. But when I launch Chrome, I'll have two on the dock rather than just one. All the other applications has just one Icon/group for their other instances.

Is there something I can configure so that all the instances of Chrome will appear in just one group?

Basically here are two groups for Google Chrome on the dock... one for the launcher and one for the group of running instances of chrome.

Thanks in advance for any information on this.

Hey, you may have activated the option "do not link the launcher with its window" on the one that only acts as a launcher (expand the closed group to see it).

I'm still looking for the "do not link the launcher with it's windows". However, I would like to mention that I have experienced this same behavior on 10's of machines for the past 5 years. It's something I got used to. This happens with "Google Chrome" and only "Google Chrome". I was thinking it was either a bug in Chrome or Cairo-dock. I just recently install Ubuntu on three clients computers and was configuring them for ease of use for the new users. So while it was in my immediate attention I wanted to see how others were dealing with it.

Since you are trying to walk me through the steps to resolve it, I'm taking it that you are not experiencing this problem with Google.

Thanks in advance for helping me to find the "do not link this launcher". Maybe Google Chrome is activating it somehow. So if I can find the option, I can at least emanate that.

Thanks again!

besides the differences on my version of the GUI, and language, this is the option that triggers exactly what you said (I use it for the file manager).
http://leopard.hosting/download.php?f=vtijs

Otherwise, it may be something in the application desktop file as IIRC we just launch that.

grep Exec /usr/share/applications/chromium.desktop
Exec=chromium %U

I forgot the simplest answer: bad class name for the program.

Use the grab button under the option I pointed with my red arrow. Click on your browser to get its class and apply.

Thanks for the update. I was trying not to appear ignorant and spent the last hour and half looking for it. These are the steps I've done and what I see.

Expand the Chrome Group -> Right click on one of the Icons -> Then I get these options:

  • New Window
Creates a new window

  • New Incognito Window
New Incognito Window

  • Window
- Allows me to show/hide all windows
- close the window

  • Other Actions

- Move to the desktpo
- Full screen
- Keep above
- Visible on all desktops
- Kill the app

The other option is to right click on the group without expanding them. Here I get the option to Configure Cairo-dock. My Cairo-dock configuration menu looks totally different from yours. You're have a title called "Cairo-Dock Config" with the different applications listed where its obvious that you can configure the apps. I can't get to my applications list.

I'm working on a new config GUI, that I try to make simpler (need my new dock called cairo-dock-rework).

You need to edit the icon of the launcher. I'd go for the one without the subdock (right click menu: 2nd line, 1st option = edit icon. May be 2nd option after launch new).

To reach the icons list:
In the simple config, it's the 1st tab, current items.
In advanced config, the current items list button is in the 2nd group (feels lost, that's why I went for the GUI rewrite).

Thanks. I found it. It was set at the default just like all the other icons. There was no check mark. I tested placing a check mark and exited. It still behaves with the same issue.

Looking at your menu I notice you are running "Chromium" and not "Chrome". I don't experience this issue with Chromium or any other application. It only happens with Chrome. Is it possible that you can try it with Chrome? Do you have the issue with Chrome? And again, this issue has been in effect for four years. It happens on 10's of computers that I setup for my clients, including two yesterday and two new fresh installs of Ubuntu and Cairo-dock today.

If you don't experience the problem, I would gladly test anything you suggest so that we could possibly resolve it for others who are quietly tolerating the glitch.

Now that you have the conf, try the Class Grab Button option (under my red arrow), and make sure you unchecked the option I pointed.

click grab, click the window, see what class is displayed in the box, save and test.

I never used chrome (didn't know this was a thing on linux).

That resolved it... the "grab" button.

Thanks!
