My system:
Cairo 3.3.2
Ubuntu 14.04
Compiz 0.9.11.3
Gnome 3.8.4
My Problem:
I was messing around editing the Applications Menu by using the Configure Menu option available in the right-click/context menu. Due to a hand spasm, I accidentally clicked something, but I don't know what since the Configure Menu tool closed immediately afterwards.
Now there are no menu items listed in the context menu when I left click on the Applications Menu icon on my dock. When I try to go back to the Configure Menu tool using the right click menu, I get a window that pops up, but crashes before my system can finish drawing it. If I enter a menu item name in the top field, it works only if the menu name is the same as the command. If I enter a menu name that differs from its command name, or enter a command name, it fails e.g. "firefox" works, but entering "terminal" does not. Also, it does not attempt to list matching menu items as I type. (e.g. typing "fi" doesn't cause a list to be created below of any menu items beginning with "fi".
What I have attempted so far, in order:
1) I removed the Applications Menu icon using the Cairo configuration tool, applied, logged out, logged in and added the applications menu back.
2) Renamed ~/.local to ~/.localBAK and rebooted, forcing a new creation of .local
3) Restored /etc/xdg/menus/gnome-applications.menu from last weeks back up and rebooted. (for what it's worth, there seemed to be no difference between the two when I visually scanned them)
4) Reinstalled Cairo without first removing it, in hopes of using Synaptic Package Manager to overwrite any Cairo config files I didn't know about with fresh default files.
How can I reset the Applications Menu without using the normal right click Configure Menu option?
<edit> I realized tonight that I posted this incorrectly into the installation problems sub-forum and have moved it to usage problems. |

Hi, user menu changes may be applied to this directory (can't check ATM):
That seem consistent between my dir and the spec
Small english logic question about this sentence:
What I have attempted so far, in order:
1. In order (to repair)
2. In (this) order
3. Both implied. |

Thank you for the information. It seems my $Home/.config.menus folder has many files labelled applications.menu.undo-$NUM as well as applications.menu and gnome-applications.menu
I looked first at applications.menu under the assumption that this is the text file Cairo Dock checks when I click on the Applications Menu icon. It appears that most of the menu items are not being listed because they are bracketed by <exclude> and </exclude> tags.
sample:
<Menu>
<Name>Preferences</Name>
<Exclude>
<Filename>empathy-accounts.desktop</Filename>
</Exclude>
<AppDir>/home/gecko/.local/share/applications</AppDir>
<Exclude>
<Filename>mail-notification-properties.desktop</Filename>
</Exclude>
<Exclude>
<Filename>vino-preferences.desktop</Filename>
</Exclude>
<Exclude>
<Filename>evolution-settings.desktop</Filename>
</Exclude>
<Include>
<Filename>alacarte-made-5.desktop</Filename>
</Include>
<Include>
<Filename>alacarte-made-6.desktop</Filename>
</Include>
As for my ambiguous use of the phrase "in order" I was trying to convey that these are the things I have tried in order to fix my problem, in the order I tried them. I apologize for the confusion.
I will spend some time tomorrow going through the various undo files and gnome.applications.menu files to be sure I understand the logic and syntax of the applications.menu system before I attempt to make any changes. I do know enough to make backup copies first of course, but I am looking at this as a learning opportunity and not just a technical issue to be solved. |
