OK, this is a bit hard to explain. I am running Ubuntu Gnome 14.04.1. I have Cairo 3.3.99. The problem is reproducible on my production desktop or in a Virtual Box VM.

The problem is that sometimes when launching an application from the Cairo dock [or Docky or Plank for that matter] the application window is hidden behind another open window. I have done a lot of testing and it seems that it is related to the absence of the Dash on the left side of the screen. The problem is most noticeable if dash is not displayed and the foreground window is moved to the left of the screen into dash space. Then when you launch another application of files, the app window will open behind.

To reproduce:

1. Launch Firefox and have it will 80% of the screen. Move FF to the left top corner with a little space showing on the left and top.
2. Launch Libreoffice and have it fill 80% of the screen. Move LO to the right side of the screen.
3. Launch Files. It should open behind LO.

Since this affects all docks that I have tried on 14.04 and 14.10 I am not sure who to take this to. The gnome shell folks probably are not interested.

So, assuming you can reproduce this is there something you can do?

Hello

(Just to not mix 'Files' application and regular files, I prefer using the old name Nautilus to using this new name Files)

Launch Files. It should open behind LO.

Do you have this problem only when launching two apps like that? Or are all your new Nautilus windows always opened behind the window which has the focus?
I'm using Ubuntu 14.10 and I confirm that the Nautilus windows are not opened on top of other windows but it sends a notification to the X11 server or via DBus (and then the dock animates Nautilus' icon).

Do you also mean that you only have this "bug" when Cairo-Dock is running?
It seems I also have this bug when Cairo-Dock is not running. Can you confirm that? Simply quit the dock and launch this command from a terminal:
nautilus .

And do you have this bug if you also launch this command when using Gnome-Shell?

Hi Matttbe,

I have tried several other docks, Docky and Plank. Both have this problem although I do not believe it's a dock problem but rather a gnome shell problem with stacking.
The problem is not limited to the two applications I referenced. I have seen it with other apps; I have Nemo installed (but Nautilus controls the desktop) and also a deb version of Chrome. Both of these have the problem. I want to say that anything not installed from a ubuntu repository has the stacking problem.

The reason for posting this to this forum is that I was hoping that you might spot or know the answer

Windows are managed by the Window Manager (Compiz, Mutter, Metacity, etc.). It's maybe a problem with your WM but I think it's maybe due the application which sends other instructions.
Feel free to report this bug to Nemo/Nautilus devs and also maybe to the devs of your WM

Bonsoir,
