Hi, I'm trying to get transparency working properly on Icewm without nvidia or ati proprietary drivers, etc. It seems to sort of work OOTB, the black rectangle is only there temporarily. But selecting a compositor in settings gives "none found".

What should I try?

Hi,

By default with Cairo-Dock 3.3, if there is no composite manager running, the dock will use a Fake transparency (by drawing the wallpaper as the background of the dock).
IceWM is not a compositing window manager and if you need one, you have to use a standalone composite manager such as Xcompmgr or Compton.

Ok thanks.

I installed xcompmgr, and it runs, but cairo-dock tells me "no fallback". That's including if I type the xcompmgr command in the field in the cairo-dock composite settings.

Where did you set that? In the settings of the Composite Manager applet?

Yes, but it doesn't matter if I start xcompmgr first or not either.

I don't believe this is a cairo-dock issue but an icewm issue and finding information about using a composite manager in icewm is not very easy. I am very good at finding information and I can't find much on this.

You may be able to use information from Fluxbox because the process is very similar, uses most of the same files and information on Fluxbox is far more abundant.

What I was able to find out for both Fluxbox and icewm is that you probably need to add an xorg.conf section to use xcompmgr. If your distro does not use xorg.conf but the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d then you should be able to add a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d (may need to create the directory if it does not exist). You should be able to call it something like 50-xcompmgr.conf with the contents

Section "Extensions"

Option "Composite" "Enable"

Option "RENDER" "Enable"

Option "RenderAccel" "true"

Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
EndSection

I used a page from a Fluxbox guide for the information http://blog.bodhizazen.net/linux/a-5-minute-guide-to-fluxbox/

An example .fluxbox/startup file shows some of the flags for xcompmgr (I don't know what the flags do or which are really needed)

usr/bin/nitrogen --restore &
/
usr/bin/xscreensaver &
/
usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11 &
/
usr/bin/xcompmgr -----&

# Network manager
nm-applet >/dev/null 2>/dev/null &

#Wicd
wicd-client -n

exec fluxbox

You may also need to look at starting things like gnome-volume-manager for file manager things like shortcuts. But again finding info for icewm is not very easy. If possible you may want to try out fluxbox and get it working first and port that information to icewm.

As an update I was able to get fluxbox working with both xcompmgr and compton but could not get either to work with icewm.

You can try to get an answer at http://sourceforge.net/projects/icewm/support or the email address at the bottom of the main icewm site http://www.icewm.org/
