This was a strong feature in 2.4 which is now lost. Can we not have it back? it allows multiple instances of browsers or Nautilus to be instantly accessible and in the order in which they were opened.

oh it's still possible of course.
IIUC, what you want is just to not group the windows of a same appli in a sub-dock.
Open the configuration window, (switch to advanced mode), go to Taskbar, the option is there.

No, I think it's to regroup icons of the same class in the main dock: if you open 3 windows of Firefox, you'll have 3 icons of Firefox next to the main Firefox's launcher. (it seems this option has been removed when the taskbar has been rewritten)

I'm having this behavior now, in the Taskbar options only the first 2 are enabled
