[Ubuntu-10.04.4 / NVidia graphics / GLX-Dock-3.0.2]
Hello all,
I accidently deleted the network status symbol (eg. WLAN with 4 bars or two cable plugs for LAN) from the upper right dock. Obviously ''nm-applet'' is running (nm-applet --sm-disable)
How do I get it back? |

Hello,
Simply enable 'Notification area' applet
(or 'Old Notification area' applet) |

matttbe : Hello,
Simply enable 'Notification area' applet
(or 'Old Notification area' applet)
Tried both before I posted but to no success: The notification area remains empty, though in place. Do you know if there is a tool like gconf-editor or gnome-tweak (or others) where I could check the configuration low level?
Remember, this question is related to Ubuntu-10.04.4 with Gnome-2.x
EDIT: I temporarily started "gnome-panel" from a terminal - it shows the nm-applet as it should! How do I get it from there into Glx-Dock? |

Remember, this question is related to Ubuntu-10.04.4 with Gnome-2.x Yes, this is why I also suggest to enable 'Old Notification area' applet
This applet can be set as a desklet on your desktop (or on the widget layer of Compiz) or on a subdock but it's not possible to set it on the dock due to the wave (there is a zoom which is not supported by this widget) |

Okay, at least I have the network icon now though it flies completely isolated (no dock/panel/nothing) over my desktop. I added a subdock to the upper right dock but am unable to attach the icon to it (see screenshot)

Any idea? |

Yeah, maybe not so easy
- Open the icons manager (right click on a launcher or applet / name of the icon / Edit)
- Click on 'Old Notification Area' (on the left of the panel)
- Click on the desklet tab and then disable this option: Is detached from the dock

So far not too bad
I would be happy to have this subdocks content (WiFi and Battery symbol) in it's parent dock.
Is there a way? Currently I have to click the old systray icon or press <Ctrl>+<F7> to view it:

Yes, I understand what you want to have but it's currently not possible to set it on the dock due to the wave (there is a zoom which is not supported by this widget).
Ok, there is no wave with this view but... @fabounet: can you re-explain why we can't add an exception only for this view? |

docks contain icons and icons only (=> no GTK widgets)
well it's technically possible to do that of course, but that would hard to get a really good integration(*) with the other icons, and it would be a lot of work just for this case (Hint: this applet is going to disappear eventually, because all distros will switch to the new Notification system in a near future, amen )
for instance, switching to the 12.04 (which is also an LTS) would solve the problem
(*) not only the zoom, but also dragging icons, the right-click menu, the position of other icons when the systray resizes itself, the label when hovering an icon would be a GTK tooltip, not the usual label, etc |

@fabounet and @matttbe: Thanks for the enlightenment!
The problem occured on one notebook which I downgraded to 10.04 LTS
because the 12.04 LTS system produced many stability/freeze problems
on it which are certainly not glx-dock problems ...
The notebook in question belongs a different person, not me,
so I looked primarly for stability.
On my own Notebook (Acer Aspire 1810TZ) I have glx-dock installed
under 12.04 LTS - which seems to be considerably slower more buggy
compared to 10.04 LTS. I'm not happy with that update but I had
to do it due to new software/updates and their dependencies.
Conclusion:
10.04: The workaround for the WiFi icon suggested my @matttbe works fine.
12.04: No glx-dock problems but enough other issues.
Thanks |

12.04: No glx-dock problems but enough other issues. The 12.04 is a LTS version so I guess you can just wait and update your system to no longer have these issues |
