I wanted just shortcut to my home folder. I dragged and dropped my home folder from the applications menu, but CD (trying to help me) inserted the Folder applet. Since I just needed the shortcut, I added a custom launcher named "Home" calling Nautilus:

  • Right-click on the dock -> Add -> Custom launcher
  • Name: Home
  • Command: nautilus "/home/my_user_name"

Thank you for this tips!

@ fabounet: why not adding a dialog to choose if the user want to use the Folder applet or not?

is there not already a dialog to ask if the user wants to import the folder content ?
the Folder applet can also be used as a mere launcher (no sub-dock).
I think this is slightly better than a launcher, because it will use the correct file manager, and it won't take an indicator when it's clicked.

No, if I drop a folder into the dock, there is no message.

Yes but the folder is next to the applets. But ok, the user can move it but there is no message to use it as a launcher or as a watcher.

ok I should add it then (thought it was already done )

Yes but the folder is next to the applets

I guess because you separated applets from launchers ? this is the reason why I've changed this behavior in all our themes to "don't separate anything"

If this is useful as a possible alternative:

  1. Right-click Cairo-Dock -> Cairo-Dock -> Configure
  2. Click Advanced Mode -> Under Files -> Tick the checkbox next to "Folders"
  3. Next Left-Click "Folders' " box from that same window in step 2 -> Att the top of the window -> Click the tab "Configuration", switching from the tab "Icon"
  4. For the setting "Show Folder's Content?" click the Browse button, and navigate to where you are just OUTSIDE of the folder you want the Folders Launcher to be linked to.
  5. Now, click the desired folder once and click OK.
  6. (OPTIONALLY: tick "Show Hidden Files" if you wish to see all System folders in that directory)
  7. Click Apply and close the window

For example, i browsed to the inside of the Home folder, but outside of the steven folder, then clicked steven once, then okay. This is redundant for experienced users, but not for newbies like me. ;p

  1. Now, a launcher for Folders should appear on your Main Dock, and can be moved to the dock of your choosing through the context menu for that Launcher. When you click this launcher, a slide should open up, displaying ALL folders in the selected directory.
