You've to use a SVG file. As you can see into icon.sh, a SVG file has been included. The day and the month are replaced by two variables.

It's also possible to use a PNG file by including it into a SVG file and by changing the full path (you've to edit the SVG file with a text editor and to replace it by only the name of the file)

Open "icon.sh", you can see (line 28-510):
printf "(...)" > icon

The SVG file has been included from line 28 to line 510. The day and the month has been replaced by "$DAY" and "$MONTH" variables and all double-quotes (") has been replaced by \"

an SVG image is just plain text.
you can replace the one inside the applet with your own (and replace the number of the day and month by "$DAY" and "$MONTH" as Matttbe said).
