Hello there,
I am in the process of switching completely from Gnome Panel to Cairo. For this i am also making my own theme, with which i feel comfortable doing this.
Something however bothers me with cairo, it is the appearance of it that sometimes is too wobbly and hanging on all sides like a Christmas tree with too much decoration on it.
What i have in mind is to be able to create sub-docks which are appearing in line under (or above) the current dock. For this the background should be extending downwards or upwards respectively. It should be able to go several levels like this. Does it make sense? Perhaps i should make a mock-up?
Accessorily, i believe the dock would look greater if it had a drop shadow on the desktop, wouldn't it?
Please let me know what you think of this.

Hi,
I made a mock-up:
The top dock is the main dock and the dock below is the sub-dock which should slide down as i hover the Ubuntu icon. Ideally the Ubuntu icon is meant for the Application menu. This system should apply to all sub-docks.
Visually either the sub-dock slides down or the main dock extends to fill in the space. It could be done inversely too: the main-dock could slide down to leave space for the sub-dock. |

What do you think about the subdock replacing the main dock ? I tried to influence fabounet for this but i think it has got too many stuff to catch up first. But your idea could be great.
So +1 |

Well subdock replacing the main dock would be nice looking, but would it be efficient? Suppose you want to go back to the main dock, then you would have to remove your cursor altogether and wait for the main dock to come back. If you have a sub-sub-dock open, and you want to go to the sub-dock, you'd have to start again from main dock...
Sliding down or up would behave more like a menu, without losing the quality of a dock. |
