Hey all!

I've tried making my own and I am not an artist. I've tried converting png to svg through inkscape and those all turned out like crap. I was able to make a complete set of battery icons created in svg (someone elses art) into a theme and it worked good, but its just ugly. Can any of you artists make a cool battery gauge? Preferably something darker, or blueish. Some examples

http://www.veryicon.com/icons/system/mac/battery-6.html

Maybe something that goes along with--
http://www.veryicon.com/icons/system/hologram/recycle-full-3.html

or something that goes along with the icon theme I'm using (which would be hard since its black and white)--
http://gnome-look.org/content/preview.php?preview=1&id=124185&file1=124185-1.jpg&file2=&file3=&name=LaGaDesk-BlackWhite-III

Any help is welcome...

I think that it's maybe better to directly contact authors of icons themes.
Maybe they can export their icons into svg files because I'm sure, they don't work with png files.

Or you can also make your request on IRC or on Gnome-Look forum because I think there are more artists there

Thats some good ideas. I'll definitely do that.

Some other questions--
Is it normal when converting from png to svg, to get a crappy conversion, or is their a better program to do that? Currently I'm just importing the image, then saving it as an svg, is there a better way to do that in Inkscape?

yep, because you don't need to convert the image into an SVG file (that is to say, to vectorize the image), you just need to embed the image inside a SVG

Inkscape is a vector graphics editor application. It uses SVG format (you can also edit these files with a text editor). PNG is a bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression. It's totally different, the opposite in fact

How do you do that? (so that it looks good)

With Inkscape you can import a bitmap file: Go to the Effects menu -> Images -> Embed All Images. This will save all bitmaps inside the file, but can make the file quite large. Inkscape will also only embed PNG or JPG files.

Ok I DID IT!!! I guess some things just turn out more pixelated than others. I found an Icon that actually looks really nice in 44 x 44 once embedded...
I will post it as soon as I fine the author of original icon (which I chopped up into intervals, guess i'm kinda artsy after all... ) and get permission to.

If I remember correctly we used to be able to choose what icon to use as the charge indicator and since my theme is black and white, the black charge indicator doesn't work if the batteries (I can't see it). Is there still a way to change it? (I couldn't find it in the PowerManager configuration tab). Or is there a way to add to the theme.xml file?

once you made your gauge, just copy its folder into ~/.config/cairo-dock/extras/gauges, it will then be available in the list of themes

Thanks to that notation in help, I already knew that, but thanks for making sure!

As for the charging icon I just copied the one I wanted to /usr/share/cairo-dock/plug-ins/powermanager/charge.svg; however, its still the same size (no matter how large I made the icon), so it is hard to see. Is there a way to change the charging icon size, or is that in the code?

Finally, I've determined that the original icon is a pilfer of a pilfer of a pilfer, etc... So, I'm going to go ahead and post a preview:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_ReGMhHpqTE8/S_6hxV-dW1I/AAAAAAAAAHw/Nf7g-Co7GKU/gauge_preview.png

What do you think. The original icon isn't mine, but I did do the chopping to make it into this gauge. It was originally an Icon for a database but I thought it being in sections worked perfect for a black and white battery (since there are no colors to determine the charge at a quick glance, you can just count the sections with that quick glance) and it also reminded me of three watch batteries !

For a Black and White theme, isn't better with something like that ?

I'm using the following Icon theme--

http://gnome-look.org/content/preview.php?preview=1&id=124185&file1=124185-1.jpg&file2=&file3=&name=LaGaDesk-BlackWhite-III

As you can see there is a lot of grey inside, so the inverse would not be as fitting in my dock, but I still love the inverse. Very nice!

what do you mean by "it's still the same size" ?

I guess I was trying to make the icon more prominent in the theme, so it can be easily seen. Right now it has to be red to be noticeable, which is completely against my color scheme. And its still hard to tell that its a charge lightning bolt.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_ReGMhHpqTE8/TAAOJ2JR8BI/AAAAAAAAAIE/qLSY-50V3kc/Screenshot-15.png

Where as, if it were larger and more prominent it could be black or blue (blue matches the desktop and trash I'm using).
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_ReGMhHpqTE8/TAAOJ0bU1DI/AAAAAAAAAII/xZShx0OGfDk/example_charge.png

or
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_ReGMhHpqTE8/TAAOKLyFj8I/AAAAAAAAAIM/H3VY1oUAMrY/example2_charge.png

and I would know that its charging AND tell that its a lightning bolt...
