Hello, I am using Cairo Dock 3.3.2. I just activated the Notes-Taking applet and installed Tomboy notes. I worked well until I rebooted. Now the applet will not connect to Tomboy. The applet icon shows a red circle with a white line instead of the number of notes. When I click on the applet icon, it launches a new instance of Tomboy each time. How can I correct this? Thanks.

Playing with this some more it seems that the only way to have the notes-taking applet connect to Tomboy is to remove it from the dock, log out/in and enable it again. If I leave it on the dock and log out/in, it doesn't connect and only starts more Tomboys. If I remove it and immediately re-enable it, clicking on the icon also just opens more instances of Tomboy. This is Kubuntu 14.04.1.

Hello and thank you for this bug report!

Do you also have this bug if you remove and readd this Notes-Taking applet during the same session? Or if you don't remove this applet but you relaunch the dock?

I've found the only way to get the applet to work is to: start the computer (or log out/in) without the applet in the dock, start Tomboy, then add the applet to the dock. Any other combination such adding the applet before starting Tomboy, exiting the dock and relaunching it, just disabling and re-enabling the applet does not connect to the running Tomboy and clicking on the Notes-Taking applet just starts a new instance (but still does not connect to it). In other words, clicking on the applet icon five times would launch five instances of Tomboy, but still not show a note count.

I can confirm that this is happening. If you start tomboy and then add the note taking applet everything seems ok but if you quit tomboy then attempt to open tomboy again the applet will not reconnect with tomboy. If you quit tomboy, remove the applet then quit and restart cairo-dock then repeat the start tomboy then add the applet it will work again.

If you attempt to add the applet first then start tomboy the applet will not connect to any tomboy instance. Clicking on the applet will launch a new tomboy instance every time you click.

I actually get a cairo-dock crash if I quit tomboy, remove the applet then start tomboy again without quitting cairo-dock. The backtrace from these steps http://pastebin.com/3QDLPdqc. If nobody else can reproduce this crash it may be specific to my system.

I did the cairo-dock -l debug but there is a great deal of information. If you want something specific searched for just give the command and I will do it.

Yes, I can confirm that cairo-dock crash scenario. Run Tomboy and applet. Quit Tomboy, remove applet. Restart Tomboy. Cairo-dock crash.

While this issue is being researched I have a couple of suggestions that may help.

1) Create a custom launcher to autostart tomboy then start cairo-dock at login. I tested this by creating a script and setting it to autostart in xfce (not sure which distro you are using so can't advise on the steps to create the autostart portion). The script is simply:

#!/bin/bash
tomboy &
cairo-dock &

Or

2) When cairo-dock starts and the notes applet shows the error symbol indicating it is not linked to tomboy you can start gnote, change the notes applet to link to gnote, start tomboy, change the notes applet to link back to tomboy, and close gnote.

Update: removing the note-taking applet from cairo-dock while it is set to tomboy then quitting tomboy will also cause the crash of the dock. I didn't do a backtrace on this but the debug messages are below:

debug : (/build/buildd/cairo-dock-plug-ins-3.3.99.beta1.2.really.3.3.2/tomboy/src/applet-backend-tomboy.c:_on_watcher_owner_changed:379)
=== org.gnome.Tomboy is on the bus (0)
debug : (/build/buildd/cairo-dock-plug-ins-3.3.99.beta1.2.really.3.3.2/tomboy/src/applet-backend-tomboy.c:_tomboy_disconnect_from_service:243)

warning : (/build/buildd/cairo-dock-3.3.99.beta1.2.really.3.3.2/src/cairo-dock.c:_cairo_dock_intercept_signal:182)
Cairo-Dock has crashed (sig 11).
It will be restarted now.
Feel free to report this bug on glx-dock.org to help improving the dock!
info on the system :
Linux 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:31:42 UTC 2014 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

Hello and thank you for this backtrace and the scenario!

Is it maybe possible to reproduce it after having installed all debugging symbols?
sudo apt-get install cairo-dock-dbg cairo-dock-plug-ins-dbg
(you need to add our PPA)

Has any progress been made with this bug? Does it still happen in 3.4.0?
