After spending quite a few hours on this theme, I'd like to share it with you.
It's designed in Linux Mint, but should probably work on other operating systems with a bit of tweaking.
It has a sidebar which is permanently in place and visible, as well as a bottom bar which disappears when other windows are open, but appears when the mouse hovers over it again.
This picture is an impression of the theme (clock and time/date included).
