Hello,
Just a quick idea here: it seems we can easily get the global background colour thanks to the _GNOME_BACKGROUND_REPRESENTATIVE_COLORS attribute of the root window.
This colour is used by Unity (for the background of the dock I think) and libnotify (for the background of the notifications).
Why not on the dock? But how? Do you have any idea?
(The background of the dock? Of the menu? Background of icons? Bubble?) |

Is that specific for Ubuntu ? Gnome ? Or it's generic ?
Maybe it's a lot of work for just one system. Otherwise, of course that can help to obtain a good integration for everybody without manual configuration. |

According to the name and the sources of Gnome-Desktop, it's GNOME specific...
You can check if you have it: xprop -root | grep BACKGROUND
Maybe it's a lot of work for just one system This attribute gives us the colour (e.g.: rgb(152,147,133)), it's easy to grab this colour and be notified when the colour changes (the dock is already notified when the background is modified).
But we have to know if it's interesting to use it |

On Xubuntu 14.04 system with Gnome and some KDE stuff added on.
_GNOME_BACKGROUND_REPRESENTATIVE_COLORS(STRING) = "rgb(25,32,123)"
Will check on my Debian Wheezy system later. |
