I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10. Since the upgrade, Cairo Dock has been acting strange. The text in the captions is gone, but it seems that it isn't missing for everything.

I just tried a full reinstall of Cairo Dock, by doing a autoremove --purge and then an install, but it is still happening.

For example, under the "home folder" applet, the caption is blank, just black. When it expands, I see "File System", but the CDROM is blank. I've got captions for Documents, Music, Downloads, etc., but Pictures is blank.

Of the default icons on the dock, Thunderbird and Firefox are blank, but Empathy has text in the caption.

What is going on here?

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

A few more notes, I'm running the latest version (3.3.2), and I the text is also missing from the confirmation caption. I get a black text box with the green check and red X, but no text.

By the way, I did open this question, I just forgot to log in when I created it initially.

Hello,

This is strange
Do you have this bug with the default theme?
cairo-dock -d /tmp/cd-temp-dir

Yes, same problem.

@fabounet: any idea?

I'm having the exact same problem, and can't figure it out. Some icons have names others don't. It doesn't matter what theme I use. Some just end up black.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried to use a custom appearance for label ?

Guest, Wednesday 23 April 2014 à 17:14

I have exactly the same symptoms after upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04. I've tweaked the caption options but still some of the labels are missing.

To give similar examples to those above:
Thunderbird = Shows
Chrome = Blank
Twitter = Blank
Empathy = Shows

Then for the link to my Shortcuts (the icon with the house on it ) as it expands I have the following results:
All mounted volumes = Blank

Home Folder, Documents, Music and Downloads = All show
Pictures, Videos and Descktop = All blank

!!! Don't forget the Anti-spam filter !!!

!!! Don't forget the Anti-spam filter !!!

The text is there, it is just not visible.

As noted in 1st post it is also a problem with confirmation box; and it also affects the help dialogue boxes that pop up on the dock when hovering over an item in the control panel.

For the icon captions, if you change the 'Launcher's Name' in the caption for an icon, the length of the caption changes to reflect the length of the text entered but text is still not visible.

Also, if you enable 'Draw the outline of the text?' then you see the text appear for the affected icons in black. It is a bit fuzzy, but it works.

Hope this helps you find the bug.

I am seeing it on Xubuntu 14.04 with XFCE 4.10.

Hello,

Did you use Ubuntu 14.04 before the official release? If yes, maybe you'll need to change the config of the labels or use the default theme, sorry for that
mv ~/.config/cairo-dock/current_theme ~/.config/cairo-dock/current_theme.bak

I'm also having this problem since upgrading from 13.04 to 14.04. I didn't use 14.04 before the official release, but moving the current theme or changing themes has no effect.

This is really ruining the experience of using Cairo-dock and it has been an issue for a couple weeks now.

Are you all of you using XUbuntu? Do you have this bug with or without the OpenGL backend? Can you try with the other one?

Is it maybe possible to give us a link to a screenshot? Maybe we miss something...

I am experiencing this issue as well. I am running Xubuntu on several machines. The problem exists on machines that were upgraded from 13.10 as well as on a machine with a fresh install of Xubuntu 14.04. On yet another machine - my most powerful laptop with a relatively new nVidia card - has not shown this issue (also a fresh install of Xunbunto 14.04.)

One other item to go with my last post that included the screen capture. The issue occurs with and without the OpenGL backend.

Is it possible that this bug only occurs when using an Intel video card?
glxinfo | grep OpenGL
lspci | grep VGA

What I have:

Fresh Ubuntu-Studio 14.04 (XFCE) nvidia 6150SE >>> no problem

Fresh Ubuntu-Studio 14.04 (XFCE) AMD R9 270 (prop AMD driver) >>> has the text-box issue

Fresh Ubuntu-Studio 14.04 (XFCE) AMD HD3000 series (X-org) >>> no problem

Fresh Ubuntu-Studio 14.04 (XFCE) Intel >>> has the text-box issue

Guest, Tuesday 06 May 2014 à 06:54

Same guest as above,

I deleted the config files, and installed the xorg driver on the AMD R9 270.

Upon restarting Cairo-dock, all is now good with the xorg driver. Will repost after I switch back to the proprietary driver again.

Guest, Tuesday 06 May 2014 à 07:03

Back again....

After reverting to the prop. AMD driver, the R9-270 machine is again showing the text-box issues.

Thank you for all these tests

Ok so it seems that it's due to a problem with video drivers (proprietary AMD and free Intel drivers) only when using XFCE...
What's your Intel video card?
glxinfo | grep OpenGL
lspci | grep VGA

I guess that the best solution is maybe to report this problem to XFCE and Mesa devs.
