( I don't get an update at the moment and i don't want to install the weekly ppa on my mothers laptop)

* Your GNU/Linux distribution (Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.).

Ubuntu 12.04

* Your Desktop Environment (Gnome, KDE, XFCE, etc.).

Gnome with effects

The error appears in all shown menus except the shutdown-menu and time-menu.

Same Problem at the computer of my dad with a fresh installed ubuntu 12.04.3 and gnome with effects

i don't want to install the weekly ppa on my mothers laptop

a wise decision, the weekly ppa is very experimental

it's a work in progress, and I have several things to commit (hopefully soon) that should fix it

Hello,

I guess this bug is due to your theme (Ambiance on Ubuntu 12.04?)
More details there: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/light-themes/+bug/968133 (or on our forum, e.g.: bg_topic.php?t=6984)
As workaround, you can simply install this package: https://launchpad.net/~matttbe/+archive/ppa/+files/light-themes_0.1.9.2-0ubuntu3%7Eprecise_all.deb
