It would be a much nicer solution.
Just a grid of icons - maybe show 4 - with a popup for ones not shown (like Windows 7). |

Hello,
This old system tray is (or should be) deprecated. Unfortunately, most GNOME apps (maintained by RedHat devs or most "core" apps) are still using it... Ubuntu has patched most of them but it seems these patches are not accepted by upstream devs...
What I want to say is that: this feature that you want is already available... in the "new" Notification Area applet because it was "easy" to do (because we receive info about icons and not something for GTK Panels which doesn't have any zoom feature when hovering the icons). We want to drop the old version but it seems we have to keep it... I'm not sure that this new feature will be implemented in this old applet (except if someone wants to help us by improving this applet ) |

because it was "easy" to do
more precisely: because it was designed to be done this way
and anyway with wayland coming they (the numerous applications) will have to move away from the old systray |
