Cairo Dock ver 3.2.1
Ubuntu Gnome 3.8
Both - not using and using Opengl
GDM windows manager
Gnome desktop
I'm having a problem with Cairo Dock working correctly with Ubuntu Gnome. I select Cairo Dock for the session during login and all I get is a wallpaper display with a mouse curser. I can ctrl-alt-del to get login but that is it. I can apply Cairo Dock in a regular gnome session and it works fine but I would like to use the Cairo Dock session. Please advise.

in this case, the cairo-dock session uses Compiz as the window-manager
I guess that there is a problem with Compiz on launch
maybe you can find some outputs in ~/.xsession-errors
I had a similar problem when upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04 (re-installing + removing all Compiz config fixed it)
if you don't mind, you can also use Metacity instead of Compiz with the cairo-dock session (I think you just need to edit the .desktop or the .session file located somewhere in /usr/share (I don't have the path in mind)) |

Is compiz used in Ubuntu Gnome? I'm not using Ubuntu but Ubuntu Gnome. Please clarify more please.

Trying something I found.../usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/...and edited cairo-dock.session. I replaced compiz with metacity. I logged out and back in with cairo dock. The cairo dock session came up as expected but a few new problems have arisen.
1. The top pane on all windows is gone. There are no windows controls on the window or right clicking the cairo dock icon.
2. I use Mythtv and love that I can access Cairo dock while using Mythtv. This isn't the case now. I can't access Cairo dock and the keyboard isn't functioning.
I will try to test further. Lastly I don't have a file or directory called ~/.xsession-errors. |

I'm going to try the re-install but would like to get your specifics on how you did it.

are you sure Metacity is running ? (I think it's not installed by default)
it's Metacity that draws the windows borders |

metacity 1:2.34.13 looks to be installed and mutter 3.8.2 is installed. Can I try mutter? |

I started metacity via terminal and got the full window back but also have a new problem. There are black horizontial bands along where cairo dock is located. See photo. Also see the error in terminal concerning metacity.

edit: The blacks bands were there, I had a black background before which hid them. |

you need to activate the composite in Metacity
see the wiki, or use the Help applet |

I tried the route you offered but I the problem wasn't solved. I'm not pursuing this route any further. I thought that Ubuntu Gnome would be better, I will just go back to Ubuntu and Cairo Dock. |

I think that Cairo-Dock session can be started with Mutter (instead of Compiz) but I think Mutter is designed for Gnome-Shell.
If you want to use it with Metacity, you'll have to enable compositing: Composite Manager.
Cairo-Dock can also be launched with Gnome-Shell: simply launch it from Gnome-Shell menu and then do a right click on the dock / Cairo-Dock / Launch it at startup.
If the dock has not been launched for the first time on a Cairo-Dock session, you'll have only one dock. But if you want the default theme for the Cairo-Dock session, simply open the config panel (right click on the dock / Cairo-Dock / Settings) and select the 'Default-Panel' theme in the theme tab. |

I wasn't able to find the info you have presented about the Composite Manager. If I decide to try Ubuntu gnome again then I will use that. |

Just to make sure we are talking apples to apples.....I need to do the above on an Ubuntu 13.04 installation not an Ubuntu Gnome 13.04? |

IF you prefer to run Metacity instead of Compiz in the cairo-dock session, and IF there is a black rectangle around the dock, then yes you need to activate the composite in Metacity with gsettings set org.gnome.metacity compositing-manager true or dconf write /org/gnome/metacity/compositing-manager true, not sure which one is the correct one but you can try both safely |

Both are correct but I usually see commands with gsettings and not dconf gsettings set org.gnome.metacity compositing-manager true |

I've tested dconf at home, and it worked
not sure what's the link between gsettings and dconf, everything is broken every 2 years on Gnome |
