Don't forget to read our very complete Wiki (www.glx-dock.org/ww_page.php) !
But don't be shy to post all your questions or bugs here !

However before you post a message on the forum and to speed up things, don't forget to include as much informations as you can (if it's posible ):
    • The version of Cairo-Dock ('cairo-dock -v' in a terminal).
    • Your GNU/Linux distribution (Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.).
    • Or you using OpenGL or not.
    • Your Window manager (Compiz, Metacity, Kwin, Openbox, etc.).
    • Your Desktop Environment (Gnome, KDE, XFCE, etc.).
    • How you got the bug and therefore the answer to the question 'How can the bug be reproduced'.
    • If it's a crash, you can launch Cairo-Dock from a terminal ('cairo-dock') and post the output.
    • Any other details you think could be useful .

Don't forget to replace this text by yours !

Hello,
I am running Debian-5.0.5, with gnome and Metacity.
I have followed the instructions here for Debian: http://www.glx-dock.org/ww_page.php?p=From%20the%20repository&lang=en
I have read the Q&A's here: http://www.glx-dock.org/ww_page.php?p=Recurrents%20problems&lang=en
When I issue the command-`apt-get install cairo-dock cairo-dock-plug-ins',
I receive a list of 45 unmet dependencies.
Must I add something else for the 'cairo-dock-plug-ins'?
I really would like to make this work.
Any help is welcome.
Nolan

Hi,
can you paste here the output of the command "apt-get install cairo-dock cairo-dock-plug-ins" ?

Hello again...
All is well. I finally found the plugins page.
I have now downloaded them, and used synaptic to *fix* broken pkgs.

Dock is installed and working well at this point in time.

I bet that names have changed... Is it possible to give us the list of all broken packages?
(maybe can you have a look at this directory: /var/log/apt)

When I install cairo-dock on my set up it hides on the bottom... the dock is there you just can't see it because it is hidden out of the resolution. I have 3 monitors one 27" in the middle and 2 19" left and right landscape in a eyefinity display. I also use maximum resolution of 3456x1366 as a whole. the 27" has 1920x1080 and the other two 1366x768. I honestly love cairo-dock but I hate that it doesn't work with this set up that I have!! I am running a AMD radeon HD 6800 and I have also used overscan to make my resolution edge to edge. please help!

@riflitos: please open a new topic. This is totally different that this current bug report.
(but about this bug, I think it should be better with the 3.1 version and even better with the development version. Is it possible to add our Weekly ppa and test the next version which should be available in a few days? maybe tomorrow)

Hi,

I'm able to launch the Cairo-Dock (no OpenGL) application from the Home folder (to the left of the screen) of Ubuntu 12.10 on my Macbook. But I'm not able to succesfully tell my machine to launch Cairo-Dock every time at startup. I've tried the Cairo-Dock command with all the different flags, but nothing works. I also wonder what program version to select; with or without OpenGL? (I have an Intel GMA X3100 card in the Macbook)

Finally, if I will be able to have the Cairo-Dock started automatically at every machine start, how do I get rid of the list of applications at the left end of the screen?

you can right-click on the dock - cairo-dock -> launch on startup
or use the GUI of your distro.

"the list of applications at the left end of the screen" is the taskbar ? you can change its behavior from the config window (in advanced mode, it has several options)

@riflitos: is it possible to test the latest development version? By adding our Weekly ppa or by recompiling the latest revision from our BZR repos (From BZR)

Ubuntu Gnome Remix 13.04
Installed PPA
Attempted to install cairo dock
Needs wants to install compiz and its addons

Gnome Shell uses the Mutter window manager, so either
(1) Compiz will not be loaded in which case it is an unnecessary dependency,
or (2) it will get loaded which will screw Gnome Shell

Any way to install cairo-dock for gnome-shell users?

Compiz is absolutely not required for Cairo-Dock
I don't know why it asks you that (it's maybe just a suggestion ?), but you can safely ignore.

This is what happens when I try to install:
apt-get install cairo-dock cairo-dock-plug-ins

The following extra packages will be installed:
cairo-dock-core cairo-dock-data cairo-dock-plug-ins-data cairo-dock-plug-ins-dbus-interface-python cairo-dock-plug-ins-integration compiz-core compiz-plugins
compiz-plugins-default curl libdecoration0 libetpan15 libgldi3
Suggested packages:
cairo-dock-plug-ins-dbus-interface-mono cairo-dock-plug-ins-dbus-interface-ruby cairo-dock-plug-ins-dbus-interface-vala compiz gnote
The following NEW packages will be installed
cairo-dock cairo-dock-core cairo-dock-data cairo-dock-plug-ins cairo-dock-plug-ins-data cairo-dock-plug-ins-dbus-interface-python
cairo-dock-plug-ins-integration compiz-core compiz-plugins compiz-plugins-default curl libdecoration0 libetpan15 libgldi3
0 upgraded, 14 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 11.8 MB of archives.
After this operation, 31.8 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? n
Abort.

compiz is only a recommendation, but compiz-core, compiz-plugins, compiz-plugins-default appear to be required.

If the result is that I will be wasting some space with unwanted and unused packages, that's ok, although somewhat annoying.
What I am concerned about is what will ubuntu do during the installation process - will it affect my system? 'cos I wouldn't know how to fix it if anything went wrong.

Found a solution ... for anybody else having this problem.

cairo-dock-core RECOMMENDS compiz-plugins, and that pulls in everything else.
Don't know how to stop 'recommends' in apt-get, but ...
Synaptic Package Manager has an option in preferences to treat all recommends as required (switched on by default).
Uncheck this and the need to install compiz goes away.

Note: For some reason the change in preferences did not work until I restarted Synaptic!

Thanks for your time.

What packages did you install ? is it from our repository ?

to skip the recommends:
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends toto

to make it permanent, create a file /etc/apt/apt.conf and put these lines inside:
APT::Install-Recommends "0";
APT::Install-Suggests "0";

But it can be interesting to install some recommended packages

BTW, I already fixed this bug on packages that I want to send on Ubuntu Raring 13.04 repos (I'll update our ppa)

PS: In fact, we just want to be sure that compiz-plugins is installed if Compiz is used but it seems that the only way to do that is to use this tips... (but now I added "| mutter" to avoid your bug)

Guest, Tuesday 26 March 2013 à 17:56

@fabounet
Yes it was your ppa, and I invoked "apt-get install cairo-dock cairo-dock-plug-ins"
Thanks for the information about apt-get.

@matttbe
Sounds about right from what I could understand of the dependency tabs in Synaptic.

Thanks to both of you for your help and swift responses.

ps. Cairo-dock is working great with the latest Gnome 3.79 which I am running from the ppas. Nice Job!

I'm really enjoying the theme/design of your website. Do you ever run into any internet browser compatibility problems? A couple of my blog audience have complained about my site not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Firefox. Do you have any advice to help fix this issue?
