only when they are minimized, because the other thumbnails depend on the kwin-effects and they only support the kde-window-taskbar

With the current method, thumbnails of windows should be provided by the window manager (by using a request through X server) but it seems that not so many WM have this feature...

You can launch the dock from a terminal and check warnings messages when you minimise a window (I guess you should see that it didn't receive the pixmap)

hmm no there isnt any message ... just some keybinding errormessages:

Yes, I guess it's just about conflicts with other apps.

But when I minimise a window, this is what I have:

warning : (/opt/cairo-dock_bzr/cairo-dock-core/src/gldit/cairo-dock-applications-manager.c:cairo_dock_create_surface_from_xpixmap:1231)
No thumbnail available.
Either the WM doesn't support this functionnality, or the window was minimized when the dock has been launched.

this feature seems a bit broken for any window manager at the moment

(at least for me with Compiz 0.9).
