In windows i'm using rocketdock. It have all necessary to me seetings.
I use rocketdock like launcher only - there is no other items, only that i placed to panel - web browser, player, mail and few other icons.
And ALL active icons (minimized or not) have indicator.
In cairo-dock i can't find setting, which allow me use indicators without taskbar - i don't want other apps in my dock.
And i have two other problems, connected with taskbar.
-minimized application don't show indicator, as i want.
-without taskbar "click to minimize" don't work (this thing very important for me)

I like cairo for abundance of options and fine applets and don't want change it. Help me, please.

sorry for my eng

I have rocketdock installed in a virtual machine (win XP) that I did some testing for other people so I may be able to help with comparing it to cairo-dock. Of all the windows bars I found rocket dock to be closest to cairo-dock and with the shock-way4D utility I was almost able to mimic basic Linux functionality (and i mean just basic).

When you say indicators without taskbar I am not sure what you mean. If I do understand I think what you are looking for is the "Notification Area" that you can add. This shows things like the systray would.

As for minimizing things they should appear in the dock. Things I have had trouble with is music players that go to the system tray but I haven't looked into them too much (I have the same trouble with the xfce panel so it is not a cairo-dock thing I am pretty sure). Other things like filemanager when minimized should show up as an icon in the dock. I haven't tested it but there should be a music player add on that lets you control a music player. Others on here that are much more familiar with these can help with that area.

There is also the "Switcher" add-on that lets you see what is on each desktop and middle click lets you select things.

my english is really bad
indicator - light dot or triangle (or frame), which indicates, running application or not.
And taskbar - taskbar mode of cairo-dock. Maybe it a bug, but indicators don't appear, if taskbar mode disabled.
For tray and other i have panel (gnome classic) on top and cairo at the bottom for launchers.
as i said, i can't minimize/maximaze launcher by click, if taskbar mode disabled and minimized application anyway won't show indicator.
My current ver of cairo - 3.0, maybe if i fallback to previous version (if it possible), problems will dissapear?
I'm not sure, but when i tried cairo-dock few years ago, there is no problems.

when you open the cairo-dock configuration you can select "Advanced Mode" the Appearance section has an indicators selection that allows you to choose if an indicator is displayed or not.

I don't have my system with cairo-dock 3.0 right now but i will check later. I am pretty sure when I looked at it last that there was an option under the taskbar selection to turn on/off minimize/maximize on left click.

On the system I am using right now with cairo-dock 2.3 turning off the taskbar turns it into just a launcher with no special effects like indicators (I am not positive but that is probably because when not showing windows in the taskbar then cairo-dock does not keep track of what is open and what is not open). I have not used version 2.4 so I am not sure if it acts differently (maybe someone else can answer that) but I would assume that not using the dock as a taskbar only allows it to launch the applications same as the xfce panel could only be used as a launcher without the Notification Area, Workspace switcher and the Window Menu to turn it into a task bar.

I have rocket dock on my other system and I will check it out later to see if I can tell exactly what it is doing.

I see that in Rocket Dock if you add Notepad.exe to your dock it will have an indicator above it when it is running no matter how it was started and even if you don't have minimize to the dock selected. But you must have it right on your dock you can not have it in a subdock as part of launchers in a folder (rocket dock does not allow a group of launchers just a folder that can have shortcuts to executables).

From what I have been able to determine you must have the "Show currently opened applications in the dock?" selected (so it acts like a taskbar) to get the effects. Maybe I am wrong as I am just new here but that is what I have found. With the taskbar option set all of the functionality works like a charm.

Also I know that in the xfce4 panel the minimized applications show up (in the window buttons applet) as well as showing in cairo-dock so having caairo-dock act as the taskbar (under xfce anyway, not sure about gnome-panel but don't see why it shouldn't) has no negative effect on the xfce panel. The only thing I have found running the two is that I can only have the notification area in one otherwise I get errors during startup from the xfce panel (no biggie to me as I only keep the xfce panel because while I am testing sometimes I quit cairo-dock and restart it from command line or menu. Since you want the Notification area in the gnome panel there shouldn't be an issue. Maybe I don't have an issue because I am not using compositing or something but I run both cairo-dock and the xfce4-panel with no issues.

Is there some specific behaviour you are getting, that you don't want, when using cairo-dock as a task bar or are you getting errors or something?

Sorry about the language barrier. I know that the translators, at least what I see in chromium, don't work that well so you must have a hard time reading these kinds of ramblings. English is not one of the best languages to try to translate with all of it's "exceptions to the rules". Here is a factoid to show why it is hard to communicate with english people: "Why does the English language have so many words that are difficult to spell? The main reason is that English has 1,100 different ways to spell its 44 separate sounds, more than any other language."

Hi Omegapex.

You might need a new option :-D.

Me i always wanted new application displayed in a subdock

You can have a look into the taskbar option if you go in the advanced option.

To minimize icon appearance i would recommend to use the following parameters.

I am sure fabounet can code this for you.

Wait till it read your post. There is quite a lots of post to read and quite a lots of feature in the pipeline.

The development is really listening to its users so you might be lucky and it might be implemented quickly.

ok let's sum up:
you want indicators on active launchers, so you want the taskbar

but you don't want other opened windows, so there is an option that mimicks the MacOSX behavior => you wil have an additionnal icon in the dock only for minimized windows.
or in the advanced configuration window, as Taiebot65 suggested.

if it's not enough, I might think of an option to never display other icons, but that sounds a bit weird to me (it's the first time I hear such a request)

It's not enough. It's my habit.I'm using rocketdock since 2007.
I'll be glad, if you insert this option to cairo-dock.But if it not easy, i can accept that

Not exactly ^^. At my first test of Cairo-dock, some years ago, I ask something like that too… but fastly the taskbar became indispensable to me. So I never do this request again

ok well, I don't promise I'll add this option, but if I (or someone else) have some free time on the 3.1, I'm not against it.

@Lylambda: plese forgive my poor memory, you're on the project for such a long time

When I had Windows, I used Rocketdock too. I think it's why I did the same request. That option can be useful for starters who want use Cairo-dock just like a launcher.
But Omegaapex, try the CD taskbar. It's really handy !

@ fab : It's official, I'm an elder
