Hi,
I've tried installing Cairo Dock on XFCE and it worked perfectly for 15 minutes (no black background)!
Now however I get the black background all the time. It started when an icon appeared at the top-right of the dock like a broken screen. I tried to click on it to close it, and then the whole desktop refreshed and the dock was now surrounded by a black rectangle. The icon seems to be the icon for the composite manager but enabling/disabling the composite-manage (by clicking Cairo-Dock -> Congfigure) doesn't affect the black background.
What should I do to diagnose this issue?
I'm running on Ubuntu 11.10, Cairo 2.4.0~2, running with OpenGL says '1' so I guess that means yes.
My video card is GA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G98 [GeForce 8400 GS]
If I run cairo-dock in a terminal I get:

Either the WM doesn't support this functionnality, or the window was minimized when the dock has been launched.

what option did you try to change in the dock ?
composition should be enabled in your window manager config (don't know where it is under xfce)
or use the fake transparency option in the cairodock system config (work not as well)

Thanks. I didn't (deliberately) try to change any option in the dock. I just tried to close the icon.
Is there any way to remove any options I have accidentally set and start again from scratch? |

Hello,
Did you enable the Composite Manager applet? (and did you click on it?) |

Thanks everyone. Compositing in my Windows Manager had been turned-off, I guess by whatever happened when I clicked on that Compositing Manager applet icon that appeared.
To re-enable it I started the XFCE Settings Manager (xfce4-settings-manager), clicked Window Managers Tweaks, entered the Compositor tabl and ticked Enable Display Compositing.
Cheers again.

well actually the Compositing Manager applet is supposed to turn the composite OFF and ON
did you try just clicking on the applet and see if something happens ? |
