I have tried using a straight cairo-dock session as well as using cairo-dock while in a unity session. Personally I want the best of both worlds..

I so much like cairo-dock better than the unity launcher.. but I really want the unity panel with the global menu at the top..

any chance of getting a launcher / applet that can launch the unity dashboard .. in essence .. replacing the unity bar with cairo-dock but maintaining the unity dash..

it could be possible (maybe in the 3.0) to have the global menu with a cairo-dock session.
about the dash however, I'm not sure it's possible.
you can try this:
open the dash
type xprop in a terminal
clic on the dash window
now you should get some information in the terminal. please copy/paste them here.
if it's callable from outside of unity, then we could integrate it in the dock

Here you go.. ran xprop in term.. then pressed super key to show the dash.. clicked on an empty part of the dash.. and it gave me the output below

_NET_WM_ICON_GEOMETRY(CARDINAL) = 239, 1, 48, 48
XKLAVIER_STATE(INTEGER) = 0, 0
WM_STATE(WM_STATE):
        window state: Normal
        icon window: 0x0
_NET_WM_DESKTOP(CARDINAL) = 0
XdndAware(ATOM) = BITMAP
WM_PROTOCOLS(ATOM): protocols WM_TAKE_FOCUS
_NET_WM_ALLOWED_ACTIONS(ATOM) = _NET_WM_ACTION_ABOVE, _NET_WM_ACTION_BELOW
WM_HINTS(WM_HINTS):
Client accepts input or input focus: False
WM_NAME(STRING) = "Dash"
_NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE(ATOM) = _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DOCK
_NET_WM_STATE(ATOM) = _NET_WM_STATE_STICKY, _NET_WM_STATE_SKIP_TASKBAR, _NET_WM_STATE_SKIP_PAGER

hope it helps

I think the best solution for your problem is to change the visibility of your Unity dock to "auto-hide" (by using the Compiz Config Settings Manager (ccsm)) and/or to place Cairo-Dock on the left of your screen. (you can use an Ubuntu session and launch the dock automatically at startup)

thanks
could it be possible to do the same with xwininfo instead of xprop ?

auto-hiding the unity dock is a correct workaround as long as you don't want to place cairo-dock on the left.
also, you still have to be careful to not touch the left edge, to not trigger the unity dock.
a better solution would be to deactivate everything but the dash in unity, or to have the dash with cairo-dock

xwininfo output below

xwininfo: Window id: 0x240000b "Dash"

Absolute upper-left X: 0
Absolute upper-left Y: 24
Relative upper-left X: 0
Relative upper-left Y: 0
Width: 1680
Height: 976
Depth: 24
Visual: 0x21
Visual Class: TrueColor
Border width: 0
Class: InputOutput
Colormap: 0x20 (installed)
Bit Gravity State: ForgetGravity
Window Gravity State: NorthWestGravity
Backing Store State: NotUseful
Save Under State: no
Map State: IsViewable
Override Redirect State: no
Corners: +0+24 -1680+24 -1680-50 +0-50
-geometry 1680x976+0+24

thats how I originally set it up.. autohide the unity launcher and unset the reveal edge so the only way it would show up was to press a key combo (super) .. but would still much prefer to keep only cairo-dock and have cairo-dock launch the dash.. that would be an ultimate solution

I'll take a look at how it is done
according to your outputs, it seems to be a normal window, so maybe there is a way to call it from outside.

I'm also looking for this.

Anyone got a solution yet ?

I tried one thing I read on ubuntu forum: create a dash.desktop file and put on the dock associated with the super key. This didn't work for me

about using the Dash, it's not possible outside of a Unity session.
So you need to have the unity plug-in enabled in Compiz.
the bad point is that the left dock can't be removed, but you can hide it and maybe make it less sensitive to not appear easily
I suggest to make a request to the devs so that we can completely remove the left dock and still be able to trigger the Dash.

By the way, the Recent Events applet offers some of the Dash functionnalities.
