can we have a bit of info on that "Composite-Manager"? is this the one that let you toggle the state? I can't see what it does

Couldn't you put the old one into the extra section? For me as an compiz-user at was much better then the new one. I could for example restart compiz with just one click and it looked very much better then the new one.

@Ppmt: yes it toggle the Composite ON/OFF
do you have Metacity installed ? if so, it should switch between Compiz and Metacity.
you can also force the WM in the config.

@gunwald: not possible, but we can improve this one
as for the look, you can customize the icon

fabounet: I upgraded to 11.04 so I assume Metacity must have been removed

I think you can still run "metacity --replace&", and have a working desktop (of course no Unity without Compiz)
could you please try this ?

you're using Unity, so Compiz.
the way to deactivate the composite is therefore to run Metacity instead
that's why I wanted to see what this command gives in a terminal

well, that's the point of the applet

so if you have the same behavior with the applet, that means it's fine.
(although window borders should be present with Metacity)

ok to clarify : when I switch to metacity I lost transparency and the applet didn't toggle it. I will try again to be certain .

the applet is doing what then? it activate the composite inside metacity (rather than having to use gconf?)

when you switch to Metacity, you loose the transparency (black background)
the applet's icon should change

the applet should go back to Compiz when you click again on it (and update the icon accordingly).

I still realy miss the old one! I would be nice to have a »Restart window manager« option, so that it is possible to restart compiz with just one click. It's not important for me to switch the window manager but some time I have to restart compiz because its new version is buggy. So it would be practical to add an option that lets the user change the left-click action to »restart« instead of change...

I think that at least any Ubuntu Natty (because of its compiz version) user has the same requirement.

ok
of course you could switch ON/OFF the composite, but I agree it's 2 times longer than 1 click
so maybe a middle-click action (I think middle-click is not used at the moment)
I'll add it soon

Just to add on this, the new composite-manager does not load compiz like the old one used to. Or I can't find the option to do so, but for example where do you tell it to load the window decorator? It cannot load emerald anymore.

Also when the wmanager crashes, will it automatically reload the window manager?

I am using CD for ages to control compiz. When I log in, CD starts and the (old) applet loads compiz with emerald and toggles everything on so I get 100% of the compiz effects.

For some reason, the new manager is able to load compiz, but not automatically on startup (need to do manually by clicking the function in the icon's menu) and not emerald (no deco at all) and when it loads compiz, I get none of the effects. I can't succeed to turn them on.

What am I missing?

Also, I am looking to know if the new manager can do all of what the old one does here:

http://uppix.net/d/7/a/aa47a08db7617654dd45fce313084.png

Is there a way we can keep the old manager while this one is fully functional?
Or if those cool features the old one has will not be migrated to the one, can I get the commands that were launched according to my above screenshot? I am probably missing something when I use the terminal to load the manager and deco.
