GLX-Dock 2.2 is a major release that addresses the common issues of a desktop interface:
- be unobtrusive
- be easy to configure and yet provide many nice effects
- be as much useful as possible with few space in the smallest footprint (especially for Netbooks)
To demonstrate the achievement of these goals, a "Unity" Theme will be made: a theme designed to bring all the useful information to the user, inside a pretty interface, and without wasting space on the screen.

Unobtrusive :
-------------

The dock contains various useful information; for instance it can tell you when a window demands your attention; or when a buddy sends you a message in Pidgin; or when a task is about to start.
For all these reasons, you want to see your dock.
However, especially on a netbook, the dock takes some space, so if you make it always visible, it will eventually get in the way of your windows.
GLX-Dock now has 2 new visibility modes to solve this dilemma :
"hide whenever the dock overlaps the active window" and "hide whenever the dock overlaps any window".
The dock will hide itself anytime whenever it wcould get in your way, and will be visible otherwise.

Now the magic is : even in the hidden state, you will still see the icons which have some information to deliver to show !

Furthermore, we can consider that some applets only exist to display some information, like the Clock, the System-Monitor, the Slider, etc.
And the magic also applies to them : you can enable an option in each of these applets to make them always visible, even when the dock is hidden.

<video of a message in Pidgin, a download finished, and clock always visible>

To make things even better, several smooth hiding animations are available : moving down, fading out, semi-transparent, etc

<video of hiding animations with selecting them in the simple configuration panel>

Useful :
--------

Applets are what brings you useful functionalities, apart from launching applications and managing your windows.
They are becoming more and more useful :

The Clock applet has a calendar (available when you click on it); now you can add task in this calendar, and be warned by the applet when a task is about to start (remember the icons that are visible even when the dock is hidden? well this also works in this case!)

The so-called "indicator-applets" developed by Ubuntu has proven to be extremely easy to integrate into the Dock, so now the Me-Menu and Messaging-menu are available (with a useful addition that makes the icon animate when you receive a message (not just add a tiny star on the icon), so that you won't miss it).

The Logout applet now allows you to lock your screen from the dock.

Desklets can now be transparent to the mouse, that is to say you can click on what is behind the desklet; this allows you to keep some applets on your desktop, always visible, and still not be disturbed by them.

<video of the 4 points>

Eye-candy is good, but sometimes simple is good too.
----------------------------------------------------------

Bringing eye-candy to the desktop is one goal of GLX-Dock, but not the main goal. The main goal is to provide a pleasant interface to the desktop.
We realized that having too much eye-candy and options hides the useful part of the Dock. Hence the change of policy.

First we changed the default theme to be more "one size fits all" catch-all : black color and Tango-like icons fit most of desktops pretty well. Of course, it is not designed to be the perfect theme ever; see it more as a starting point.
In the same way, the icons in the config panel have also been unified to a Tango-like theme.

Second, the simple config panel now lets you set up most of the parameters you'd like to change in the first 5 minutes.
The advanced config panel is still present for those of you who want to tweak their theme, but you probably don't need it any more for a basic usage.

Third, a new view has been added : the "panel" view. It turns the Dock into a pretty panel.
Also, since netbooks have a small screen footprint, it's a good idea to spread icons over several main docks. Therefore, it's now possible to create as many docks as you want, and to configure them independently (position, visibility, view, background).

Finally, all the themes available for the dock have been refreshed to make use the new possibilities of this version.
And, as a proof of concept, we made a special "Unity" theme: something clean and efficient for netbooks, as depicted by Ubuntu.
Again, it's not supposed to be the best theme ever, but it's probably a good start if you want to make your netbook desktop looking sexy.
