I've coded a new applet, for sure using Ruby, and it is called WebSearch. The usage is very simple. Right-click on the icon -> WebSearch -> Search and type the query. The applet will use Google engine to retrieve the results. Those results are shown as sub-icons. You can scroll up/down to show next/previous results. Middle-click over any sub-icon to show its description. Left-click over the sub-icon to open it in the default browser. There is a lot of little things to do such as option to retrieve links from another search engines. I will do this as soon as possible. Thanks.

Some minor bugs were fixed. I guess the branch will be merged soon. If it is possible to any of you test it, would be nice. Thanks.

I did some improvements such as show the current page if user decide so; inform the user when the applet is "Fetching ...". Most of usability. I guess the next version comes with Bing search option. Thanks.

Merged

An idea: you can open the search box with the left click if the applet has still not been used.

maybe it could be added as the icon's label ?
or maybe the search dialog could be filled with the previous search ?

Previously I thought about set the label with the search query, anyway I was wondering how twisted and ugly would looks like a long query. So I preferred set the previously query on the search dialog following the second Fabounet suggestion/question.

For the next versions I'm planning Ask (Teoma), Youtube, and Webshots. Any suggestion of sites to fetch results is more than welcome. Cheers.

Right after talking to Eduardo on Irc I have some "improvements" too

  • With the amount of search engine increasing it would be nice to be able to scroll through them with the mouse rather than going to the config panel

  • After the search it is the link that is display and the title of the page is shown only by middle clicking.....it would be better to have the opposite as the title of a page contain more "human" information than a link...May be an option to select the preferred way?
