Over the weekend I downloaded karmic and tested cairo-dock, I found that cairo-dock -o
is working on Karmic. Everything seems to be displayed correctly except for penguin.
The penguin is also not displayed correctly in GL mode when I placed it vertically
on the right. When it moves up and down, it will enter into a tunnel where it
cannot be seen. It can only be seen when I place the cursor on the dock - that
forces refresh, I think.
On this karmic distro, "cairo -c" display is also not displayed correctly as I mentioned
previously, it leaves behind a train of shadow.
( Note that it seems to be working properly when I play the dock horizontally at the
bottom. )
Since I don't use karmic, I went on to try to match my system with new libraries - I upgrade
it to 'debian unstable'. I must say it is not exactly the same as karmic.
Ok, I do not expect it to be stable, since the libraries are said to be 'unstable'.
With these sets of libraries, cairo-dock -c is working as before. But when
I run 'cairo-dock -o', I get is crash on cairo-dock :-
$ cairo-dock -o

Cairo-Dock has crashed (sig 11).
It will be restarted now.
Feel free to report this bug on glx-dock.org to help improving the dock !
Not asking for a fix here, but just want to post here to the developers
to see if it is useful to them. |

Don't use the official debian repository !
Read our wiki.
I think that the bug with CairoPenguin is fixed with the latest stable release.
If you want test an 'unstable' release, add our weekly ppa. |

A little update :-
I fixed the cairo-dock crash by removing my old /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It seems when I
upgraded from the older system, the original xorg.conf is not liked by the newer
libraries. After fixing the crash, 'cairo-dock -o' is started successfully. However,
as reported in other threads, I actually have to do 'cairo-dock -o -i' to workaround
the problem of unable to display battery, system monitor and clock.
The conclusion of this testing revealed that, for cairo-dock to work in GL mode,
1. There is no particular need for Karmic kernel. I used a generic (newer) kernel
from kernel.org.
2. There is no particular need to use KMS, unless you want to have good support of suspend
and hibernate.
3. There is no particular need to use karmic X libraries either. I use the 'unstable'
libraries from debian, because it is more compatible with my system, it will update my
system in a consistent manner.
Maybe the karmic X libraries could solve the display problem of battery, system monitor
and clock; but I have not quite tested it.
Also a little update on the penguin problem :-
The penguin problem only shows up when the dock is on the right. When I put it on the (vertically) left, and top and bottom, there is no problem. Strange, isn't it ?
Regards. |
