Greets!

I've an application (xtightvncviewer) that doesn't have a .desktop entry in /usr/share/applications. When I execute it, I get a questionmark on my dock. I'd like to define an icon for it and have tried creating a .desktop entry in /usr/share/applications, but haven't had any luck. I'm guessing I'm going about it the wrong way.

So, how do I define an icon for an existing application that doesn't already have one? And how would I override the system theme's icon for a particular application?

Thanks for the help! ^_^

Hello !

Right click on the launcher > Modify the launcher (or something like that, I translate from french )
> Path or name of the icon

That's it !

Its not a launcher.. Just an ap I executed manually.

So, what I'm wondering is, how to change to change the icon for an application not started with a launcher.. and how to override the system's icon theme for applications not started with a launcher.

name an icon with the class of the appli (get it with xprop, usually the same as the program name)
and place this icon somewhere the dock can find it (~/.cairo-dock/current_theme/launchers, or any directoy/theme you specified in the CD's config panel)

Hmm.. That doesn't seem to be working.

I am running xtightvncviewer. xprop says:

WM_CLASS(STRING) = "xtightvncviewer", "Vncviewer"

I've tried making symbolic links from /usr/share/pixmaps/tsclient.png to ~/.cairo-dock/current_theme/launchers/xtightvncviewer.png as well as Vncviewer.png but the app always starts up with a quesitonmark for its icon. I've got cairo-dock set to override X's default icon with the launcher one and made a launcher for this also.. that still starts with a questionmark instead of the launcher's icon.

I'm wondering if perhaps this application handles things differently than normal?

I've installed this soft to test , but it starts with a little GtkWindow asking me a vnc server, and disappear if I try to enter something.
it never appears in the taskbar.
The way you did should work I think, maybe you should try with vncviewer.png (lower case, cause the dock puts the class into lower case to avoid some specific issue I've encountered with some appli)

That did the trick! Grr, I should have tried making it lowercase before posting.. I know better than that.

Regarding the application, that's just a vnc client viewer, so you'd need a vnc server running that you could connect to in order to see the window (and icon) I was seeing.

Thanks for the help, fabounet! Just to warn you, I'll be starting work this weekend on the global ebuild for plugins, so be prepared for questions and comments about your global makefile.
